Sustainable train transport for the Kiruna project

In a spring 2021 development and expansion project, the city of Kiruna launched a public procurement for paving stones. One of the procurement’s requirements was that products should be delivered by train. As Benders has long been developing its own train solutions and has a collaboration with Green Cargo, this was a requirement that suited us well. We were awarded the contract.

The first delivery is this summer and the project will run until 2024. Delivering by train brings major savings in freight costs and a minimisation of CO2 emissions from transport. Compared with carrying the products by lorry from Bålsta, electric train transport reduces emissions by around 800 tonnes. This equates to the consumption-based annual emissions of approximately 100 Swedes (source: the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency).

“We’re seeing increased market interest in ecosmart train solutions. This was previously lacking in the industry. There is great potential in similar projects and we are extremely pleased when our customers take such initiatives in public procurements,” reveals, Oscar Svensson, head of sales South/West.
