Local environmental impact

Facility impact on surroundings

Some of our facilities are located in large industrial estates, others are more rural. Our operations have an impact and we seek to minimise any negative aspects of this as much as possible. The general impact of our operations on the surroundings primarily takes the form of: noise from internal and external transport; dust generation from raw material storage; and, exhaust emissions. Examples of more specific, operations-dependent environmental impact are: vibrations from blasting in our quarries; variation in groundwater levels; and, changing of the landscape.

Measures to limit impact are implemented in the form of, for example, noise suppressed machines, good maintenance of machinery, noise screening embankments, quiet fans, etc.

Biological diversity

Particularly in our quarries and pits, habitats can be created for species that thrive in certain environments. By managing the quarries/pits correctly, these habitats can be promoted, thereby increasing biological diversity. One example is our gravel pits. Here, slopes are preserved so that sand martins can breed. When extraction operations have ended, areas are got ready for another use (so-called post-treatment).
