Press release – New manual provides guidance on correct paving

2020-03-02

Svensk Markbetong is now launching a new manual on how to lay stone paving correctly. At the same time, a digital tool that makes it easy to “traffic class” and dimension the superstructure of municipal streets and industrial surfaces is being released.

The manual’s previous edition appeared 18 years ago. For designing and laying paving, the manual is the industry’s guiding light. Additionally, landscape architects use it as course literature.

New, updated manual

As the industry has developed enormously, much in the old manual no longer applied. This is why Svensk Markbetong is issuing “Paving with concrete slabs and stones – Project instructions and recommendations”. The new manual has been updated to include modern working methods. One example of this is designs using a bound base course. These were introduced to minimise rut depth development. Everything in the new manual aligns with the new requirements in “AMA Civil Engineering 20”.

“It revolves around durability. Compared with other materials, concrete paving has many advantages. Because it is temperature independent, resists torsion and withstands mechanical wear, it has a long technical life. However, the benefits of the material’s advantages are lost if the surface is incorrectly dimensioned or constructed. Using the new manual, everyone can lay paving stones correctly. The result is surfaces that last,” comments Anders Junghage, one of the manual’s four authors.

New standards were needed

In spring 2016, four companies (Benders Sverige AB, Cementa, Starka and S:t Eriks) came together in the “Climate-proof towns” research project instituted by Vinnova (Sweden’s innovation agency). They agreed that new standards were needed. This resulted in the resurrection of Svensk Markbetong, an industry technical collaboration that had been dormant since 2002.

Read the book digitally or order a free copy

Together, the companies also went through the manual from cover to cover and rewrote around 80 percent of the content. The book can now be read digitally or ordered cost-free from www.svenskmarkbetong.se.

Digital tool for easy dimensioning and traffic classification

On the new website, there is also a tool that enables absolutely anyone to “traffic class” and dimension the reinforcement layer for municipal streets or industrial surfaces.

Few people have the skills to do all the calculations necessary for correct dimensioning. Over the years, this has resulted in a large number of random estimates. However, the new tool makes things easy. It helps calculation of the intended surface’s traffic class. You then enter the climate zone, stone or slab size and a few other values. This gives you the measurements and dimensions that the traffic class requires.

“This tool will save a lot of time and money. Simultaneously, it will ultimately also help the industry to deliver more durable surfaces,” says Erik Simonsen, a development manager for Cementa and one of the people behind Svensk Markbetong.

Updating the industry’s working methods

Svensk Markbetong will continue to update and develop the industry’s working methods. Yet another manual, “Detaining stormwater with permeable paving stones”, is being released in April. In the long term, several other manuals are also to be published on the website.
