Concrete instead of asphalt

Concrete is an almost entirely natural product. It is made from gravel, sand, cement and water. This means that covering surfaces with our paving stones is more climate-friendly than laying asphalt, which is an oil-based product. Concrete is not only more environment-friendly from the start, its service life is a further “eco-bonus”. Our paving stones last as much as five times longer than asphalt.

Paving stones are being used increasingly in industrial and heavily trafficked environments. From the technical point of view, interlocking paving stones can take both large point loads and torsional forces from cranes, work vehicles, lorries and buses. From the aesthetic point of view, paving stones offer every opportunity to create attractive surfaces that enhance buildings and surrounding areas.

Benders makes and supplies paving stones. It is one of the country’s leading manufacturers and has become synonymous with good quality and extensive know-how. Our landscaping range is wide and offers many models that make it easy to create durable surfaces. Where you wish to place even greater focus on the environment, you can use paving stones with good drainage properties. Furthermore, paving stones in our Ecoline range reduce harmful nitrogen oxide in the air.

KL Maskin AB, a company in Kvänum, chose Benders’ paving stones to create a durable and aesthetically pleasing parking area for its agricultural machinery. The 6,000 square metre area is paved with Bender Superförband (“super bond”).

“Choosing concrete paving stones in preference to asphalt was easy. With today’s mechanised laying technologies, the cost of paving stones is roughly the same as that of asphalt. Furthermore, concrete is considerably more durable and it is easier to modify or replace sections or individual stones if, for example, there are spills or oil leaks,” Per-Olof Jakobsson, MD of KL Maskin AB.

Our stone paving satisfies the requirements imposed on heavily loaded surfaces. Provided that it is correctly laid, stone paving has a long service life and low maintenance costs. Other paving surfaces cannot offer the performance that paving stones do as regards temperature variations. In fact, asphalt softens at high temperatures, thereby increasing the risk of surface damage. Concrete, on the other hand, offers the same rigidity whatever the temperature. Thus, there can be no “softening damage”.

Advantages of stone paving

  • Withstands high vehicle and axle loads.
  • Withstands high static loads (e.g. stacked containers) with no risk of indentations.
  • Withstands horizontal stresses from tightly turning work vehicles and lorries.
  • Is very suitable for surfaces subject to high mechanical attrition.
  • Load-bearing capacity remains unchanged at high temperatures.
  • Good resistance to oil spills and fuel.
  • Needs little maintenance.
  • Has a long service life.
  • Reduces tyre wear.
  • Requires less illumination (thanks to light colours).
